a boomer in recovery...

Hi all!

My name is Kathleen and being born in the great year of 1957 - I find myself included as one of those classic baby boomers that you either:
  • identify with!
  • wonder about.
  • don't know anything about!
  • are sick of hearing about!

I live in Dayton, Ohio. I consider this place, "the armpit of the USA." It's the worst place I've ever lived in. I've lived in quite a few places, so that wasn't a random statement. It's more like a statement of fact.

Think about it... what do you know about Dayton, Ohio?

Other places I've lived in (beginning at birth by the way):
  • Corning, New York
  • El Paso, Texas
  • Baldwinsville, New York
  • Syracuse, New York
  • Plaistow, New Hampshire
  • Palm Beach, Florida
  • Burlington, Vermont
  • West Palm Beach, Florida
  • Hypoluxo, Florida
  • Ft. Pierce, Florida
  • Lake Worth, Florida
  • Grand Rapids, Michigan
  • Midland, Michigan

Now that you've had a few minutes to review in your mind what you know about Dayton, Ohio...  if you would...please....

Fill out the form below and send it to me to tell me what you've remembered or known about Dayton, Ohio - if you would, that is... I'll post the results right here on my office desktop! I'm truly interested in knowing what you know about Dayton, Ohio now, before you've browsed through my office!

You see, I wasn't lying about living in a few places to make such a bold statement that Dayton, Ohio is certainly, "the armpit of the USA!"

Baby Boomers Take Notice!
Being a baby boomer has just recently come to be of importance to me. I made a commitment to myself five - almost six years ago to begin a personal growth / recovery journey. What I've discovered is that being a baby boomer establishes an "identity" for me that goes way beyond being born within a certain number of years and being the largest labeled generation in history.

This label is one I've earned. It brought me to the place where I knew I needed some kind of "change" in my life. I thought the change was to move to Dayton for a "new beginning." But Dayton, being the most unattractive city I've ever known - wasn't the change I had in mind.

"Totally Dysfunctional"

Things I liked about the other places I've lived in:
  • beautiful scenery
  • close to the ocean
  • close to a very large & beautiful lake
  • fun downtown area for entertainment
  • cultural diversity in population
  • learning opportunities

I won't even go into what I don't like about Dayton, Ohio. I'll just name the three top things that make me absolutely crazy (in a negative sense) about living in the armpit of the USA.
  • there is no body of water so to speak.... (only perspiration) like the ocean or a big beautiful lake

  • Dayton Public Schools.... (I have to wince when I type that out! It's a school system in Academic Depression & Emergency! One of this fine country's worst!)

  • the crime rate (we're about the 13th most dangerous city in the USA or thereabouts) continues to grow and it's getting closer to my house ... this past year we actually had a "drive by shooting" two houses down the street from mine

I'd like to move away from Dayton, Ohio as soon as possible. Hopefully, my situation will improve with my increasing sense of well being and a move will be possible! Unfortunately, Dayton doesn't look like it will be turning around anytime soon. The entire scope of the public schools, the business opportunities and the high crime rate only deteriorates as more time continues to disappear!
